A 3-story renovation and addition to the UK Gatton College of Business and Economics. The addition includes a 4-story atrium, an auditorium, lecture halls, events room, classrooms and offices. The project updated the facility for the University’s highly ranked Business College.

Structurally, several challenged were addressed. The steel-framed building addition was constructed in an area with high karst potential, directly above an existing limestone cavern that also serves as a stormwater retention basin for a large portion of the campus. To accommodate this condition, the ground floor structure was designed to span over the cavern and is supported by steel-cased drilled piers that extend to bedrock for stability. The architectural design further called for open, unobstructed interior spaces-including classrooms and a central atrium-requiring minimal columns. To achieve this, the structural system was carefully designed to control vibrations while also maintaining a shallow structural depth. Another key challenge was integrating the new addition with two existing buildings, each built at different times using different construction methods and with
differing floor elevations. Although expansion joints were necessary, the design ensures a seamless transition between spaces, creating the experience of a single, cohesive facility despite being composed of three structurally separate buildings.
