In August 2019, Brown + Kubican conducted a comprehensive condition assessment of an existing pedestrian bridge structure. The assessment involved reviewing construction drawings and analyzing the feasibility of repairing versus replacing the bridge. The pre-engineered, prefabricated truss structure showed significant deterioration due to exposure to de-icing salts, poor detailing, and inadequate drainage. Observations included 
full-thickness corrosion, particularly in the truss chords, and severe flaking of the steel elements. After considering both repair and replacement options, BK recommended full replacement of the bridge’s superstructure due to the continued risk of accelerated deterioration from poor detailing, which would significantly shorten the bridge’s lifespan.
