To accommodate a growing student population, Morehead State University constructed a new 4-story, 552 bed residence hall on its campus. Designed to enhance the student experience, the facility features a spacious lobby, study lounges, multipurpose rooms, and kitchens on every floor, creating ideal spaces for socializing, collaboration, and group projects.
The building utilizes a wood framed structural system with open web wood trusses for both roof and floor framing, supported by wood stud walls that provide vertical and lateral stability. A drilled pier and grade beam foundation system supports the structure. Steel and engineered lumber framing were strategically incorporated to optimize vibration control and minimize structural depth. The exterior envelope consists of brick and limestone veneer with a large number of window openings. Due to brick heights exceeding prescriptive code
limits, Brown + Kubican carefully evaluated differential movement and expansion between the masonry veneer and wood framing to ensure long term performance.
