PROJECT FACTS

The project consists of two floors of approximately 35,000 sq ft each.  Each floor has laboratory and classroom space as well as office/support space.  Mechanical equipment is located on the intermediate mezzanine level between the upper and lower floors.

The structure is a steel frame utilizing steel joists for the roof and composite steel beam construction for the upper floor level.  The lower level floor is a 6” thick slab on grade to accommodate potential heavy loads in the working laboratory spaces.  The lateral load resisting system for the building utilizes reinforced concrete masonry shear walls at the perimeter. The foundation system consists of concrete spread footings which bear on soil.  The front foundation wall is nearly 20 feet tall and it is buttressed with 8” thick interior concrete walls (which divide classroom spaces) to resist unbalanced lateral earth pressures.
