BK conducted a comprehensive structural investigation and report for the historic Lake Barkley State Resort Park, encompassing the East Wing, West Wing, Main Lodge, and Administration Building. Originally designed by Edward Durell Stone in 1967, the lodge is a state treasure constructed with solid Douglas fir timbers, red cedar decking, and board-formed architectural concrete. The assessment led to a multi-phase approach for funding and construction, with BK engaged for various independent projects as both Prime Professional and Consultant Engineer.
Work included evaluation of deterioration in the timber framing and steel connections, cast-in-place concrete walls, and framed slabs. The upgrades addressed critical “Urgent” needs across the lodge facility, including structural shoring and base plate remediation in the Main Lodge, surgical timber replacements, suite access bridge strengthening, and grating and decking replacements. BK’s scope also included fire reconstruction, surgical timber replacements, mass reconstructions, and maintenance of stairs, guardrails, and minor site
elements. All repairs were thoughtfully detailed to complement the building’s original architecture.
