This $180.0 M project consists of partial demolition of the west wing of the convention center, and a predominantly vertical expansion to accommodate additional exhibit and prefunction space plus new mechanical and roof structure.
New structural construction will be mainly of structural steel with concrete slab on composite floor deck. Many existing foundations were resupported and reinforced with piles to carry additional load. Likewise, new construction required new shallow bearing spread footings and deep cast-in-place piles.
Long roof spans at the roof were created with a system of custom structural steel long-span trusses. The convention center spans Third Street between Jefferson and Market streets and its renovation is critical for Louisville to retain and grow its share of the lucrative trade show and convention business.
