This project consisted of a partial demolition of the west wing of the convention center, a predominantly vertical expansion to accommodate additional exhibit and prefunction space, plus a new elevated, clear spanning mechanical room, and towering rooftop canopy. Features of this facility include 200,000+ sq ft of exhibit space, a 40,000 sq ft column free ballroom, 175-seat conference theater, meeting rooms, and a full service kitchen. The convention center clear spans over Third Street and occupies a full city block between Jefferson and Market Streets. Its renovation is critical for Louisville to retain and grow its share of the lucrative trade show and convention business.
New structural construction is primarily of structural steel with concrete slab on composite floor deck. Many existing foundations are re-supported and reinforced with a combination of chemical grout soil improvement and micropiles to carry additional load. Likewise, new steel columns poked down through the existing street level, concrete slab and were founded on new augercast pile foundations. Long roof and floor clear spans at the exhibit hall, ballroom, and mechanical room are created with a system of custom structural steel long-span trusses.
