PROJECT FACTS

The new $35.0 M, 265,00 sq ft, Harlan County High School consisted of 3 stories with distinct gymnasium, cafeteria, library, and classroom wings.  The facility was situated into a hillside so that the gymnasium was approximately 1 story above grade while the classroom, cafeteria, and library extended 2 to 3 stories above grade and overlooked the scenic Cumberland River.

Due to its size, floor and roof structures utilized fire rated assemblies.  The facility predominantly utilizes precast concrete hollow core plank, double tee, and bleacher assemblies supported by a combination of concrete masonry bearing walls and steel frame.  The roof structure utilizes fireproofed steel beams and unprotected long-span steel joist where clear height exceeds 20 feet.  The gymnasium utilized a combination of long-span steel joist and heavy timber supported by a ring of structural steel trusses.  The lateral bracing system utilizes reinforced masonry shear walls.
