Two new 5-story residence halls for the Eastern Kentucky University Campus. North Hall, totaling 165,580 sq ft, features suite style rooms, classrooms, and common spaces for over 500 students. Martin Hall, totaling 199,480 sq ft, features a living-learning environment with suite style rooms, classrooms, multipurpose room, study spaces, and green space for over 600 students. 

Both residence halls were constructed of 8” cast-in-place Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) exterior bearing walls with a single structural steel interior beam/column line located within an 8” cold-formed metal framing corridor wall. The floor system consists of 8” hollow-core precast concrete planks with a 3” concrete topping. Roof planks are 8” un-topped hollow-core except at the mechanical penthouse areas where 12” hollow-core planks and 4” of topping are used. The lateral load resisting system consists of concrete shear walls to provide stability against wind and seismic forces. Foundations consist of concrete grade beams framing between concrete drilled piers bearing on bedrock. ICF was selected over other systems for this job because it was less expensive than the structural steel option or cast-in-place concrete. ICF had advantage over concrete masonry due to speed of construction and the ability to construct during cold weather. The design was then refined for even more cost savings.
