BUILDING & COMPONENT ENGINEERING
ALUMINUM DESIGN using fabricator’s standard sections and profiles. Engineering review, seal, and calculations.
BUILDING STRUCTURE ENGINEERING of timber, cast-in-place concrete, masonry, structural steel, ICF, and other material systems using state of the art analysis and BIM software to produce complete, highly-detailed, and well-coordinated construction documents that clearly convey the design intent. We emphasize constructability and detailing that considers means, methods, and construction phasing. Our BIM designs integrate architectural modeling to ensure coordination and compatibility. We perform complete design of structure, thereby minimizing schedule and bid unknowns.
CONDITION ASSESSMENTS with comprehensive evaluation of the building structure for condition, code compliance, and projected life.

COLD-FORMED METAL FRAMING for non-loadbearing curtainwall and load-bearing wall/floor systems with construction drawings, calculations, and engineering seal. We can design based on the components of any of the major cold-form suppliers.
EMBODIED CARBON ASSESSMENTS using a tailored or complete life cycle assessment, BK evaluates the building materials being used to determine the true carbon impact on the environment, and can make recommendations for minimizing that impact.
ERECTION SHORING AND BRACING with comprehensive evaluation of the building structure for condition, code compliance, and projected life. Services offered are applicable to both Residential and Commercial construction.
ICF WALL using comparison of empirical, slender-wall, and beam-column code design techniques to optimize wall design and minimize reinforcing tonnage. Brown+Kubican, PSC works with partners AMVIC, NUDURA, and the National Ready Mix Concrete Association’s Build with Strength Campaign.
FEASIBILITY STUDIES for viability including estimated construction costs, spatial needs, load capacity and condition.
FOUNDATION DESIGN for pre-engineered structural systems including; metal buildings, portable buildings, canopies, utility poles, bleachers, or other above grade pre-engineered structural systems.
INDUSTRIAL racks, conveyor support, pipe support, press pits, and foundations.
POLE BARN AND TIMBER FRAME using conventional lumber in embedded base or post-frame methodology; with sealed construction drawings.
FIELD CORRECTIONS for fit-up, alignment, and fabrication errors. Review of code restrictions with sealed calculations and reconstruction detail for submittal to the Engineer of Record.
RACKHOUSES using modern timber and glulam construction that honors the historical use of timber while providing structural integrity and safety compliant with today’s Building Code. Brown+Kubican, PSC through our partner Koetter Construction offers a turn-key engineered solution to rickhouse buildings and portable racking through www.kraxbarrelstorage.com.
REPAIR AND RESTORATION of structural systems including enclosed buildings such as offices and open-air buildings such as outdoor stadiums or parking garages.
FORENSIC INVESTIGATIONS into deflection, collapse, cracking, structural deterioration, or other detrimental outcome. We will investigate the structure in-place and perform analysis based on applied loading and condition.
SCULPTURES of steel, aluminum, or timber with rigging or foundation design as required. We collaborate with the Artist to verify load path and integrity while maintaining the artistic vision.
SEGMENTAL RETAINING WALLS of concrete masonry units and geogrid tieback; with construction drawings, calculations, and engineering seal.
LITIGATION SUPPORT for construction defect, building code compliance, catastrophic events, and property damage with unbiased opinions and thorough engineering support.
SINGLE BEAM/COLUMN/FOOTING DESIGN for loading and span conditions provided. Structural steel, glulam, laminated veneer; we can design multiple options so that the contractor can meet budget and schedule.
SLOTTED METAL CHANNEL FRAMING design for support of secondary building systems or medical equipment. Design is based upon industry typical material supplier.
LOAD ANALYSIS for equipment support and travel over existing structures. Contractor provides equipment model and we can perform analysis for all manner of cranes, lifts, skidsteer, and other demolition and construction equipment.for equipment support and travel over existing structures. Contractor provides equipment model and we can perform analysis for all manner of cranes, lifts, skidsteer, and other demolition and construction equipment.
SPORTS BACKSTOP DESIGN with posts and cables to resist wind, ice, and other applicable loads on netting and cable system. Design can include foundations.
SPORTS LIGHT FOUNDATIONS of cast-in-place concrete shafts or spread foundations based on light and shaft profiles with calculations and engineering seal.
LOAD TESTING for verifying structural adequacy of undocumented construction. We can develop, and work with our partners to implement, load testing strategies including load application, shoring, bracing, inspection and monitoring.
STEEL CONNECTION DELEGATED DESIGN including shear, moment, axial, brace, truss, seismic, and specialty conditions. We learn how your shop operates to design efficient connections which are easy to for you to fabricate and quick to erect. We provide thorough calculations separate from detailed descriptions/sketches so that your detailer can easily implement the design details. We also review shop drawings to verify accuracy and are always responsive to keep you on schedule.
OSHA PRE-DEMOLITION SURVEY to “determine the type and condition of structural systems so that actions can to be taken if needed to prevent premature collapse of any portion of the structure.”
The demolition portion of OSHA standards Subpart T has accounted for the most cited rule in Subpart T over the past 10 years; accounting for 15 percent of all citations and penalties. Our survey can help prevent claims and penalties while also promoting project safety.
STAIR AND RAIL DESIGN for carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. Stairs can be detailed for unitized construction or to be assembled in field. Design includes all components including connections, bearing/embed plates, hangers, stringers, pans, posts, and rails. We provide easy to follow details for your detailer to implement and we review your shop drawings to verify accuracy.

PROPRIETARY SYSTEM CO-DEVELOPMENT for non-standard or proprietary structural buildings, connections, or other structural systems.
STORM SHELTER DESIGN OR PEER
REVIEW for compliance with the requirements of Chapter 3 Structural Design of the ICC500 Standard for the Design and Construction of Storm Shelters. Depending on location, ICC500 requires Storm Shelters to be designed for up to 250 mph wind loads, in addition to specialized debris impact resistance requirements. Our engineers have designed multiple code compliant shelters and have the experience to design a residential or commercial (community) storm shelter to meet your needs. These shelters can form an entire building envelope or be a limited storm rated space located within a non-rated overall building. We can also provide independent structural Peer Review services for shelters designed by others; code required for certain storm shelter uses.
VALUE ENGINEERING from detail simplification and standardization to complete building redesigns. We simplify layouts, reduce piececount, and reduce connection material. Tonnage tracking available upon request. We work collaboratively with the Contractor and the original Engineer of Record to re-engineer with efficiency of material, constructability of detail, and thorough documents which give assurance to the owner while saving construction time and cost.
Case Study: City Center complete redesign with weekly tonnage tracking, connection simplification, confirmational analysis of existing underground garage support, and erection limitation analysis to net 6 months schedule reduction and $3 million savings. Redesign completed in 9 weeks from start date.
VIBRATION STUDY to address occupant comfort or to meet the requirements of sensitive equipment. We can perform in-house predictive analysis of standard framing or we can work with our partners to perform onsite vibration testing of in place structures.
