This $60.9 M, 4-story multi-phase project is a renovation of UK’s Chemistry and Physics departments. The first phase of the project which was the 3rd floor renovation, features 15 research labs, support and equipment spaces, and offices. The second phase features a completely new exterior façade of the building, including a 3-story entrance/atrium, a new stair tower, loading dock, and entrance additions.

The structure includes steel framed floors and roof at the new atriums and concrete bearing walls at the new elevator shaft and stair tower structures. The loading dock addition utilizes concrete masonry bearing walls with steel joist roof framing. The foundation system consists of grade beams supported on drilled pier foundations bearing into hard limestone and micropiles bearing into bedrock for new foundations within the existing building. The lateral force resisting system is a combination of steel moment frames and masonry and concrete shear walls. The project also included structural retrofit for various elements within the existing building renovation and roof top mechanical platform.
